The 14.1-megapixel DMC-FZ45 features a 25mm wide-angle 24x optical zoom f/2.8-5.2 LEICA DC VARIO-ELMARIT lens. The 25mm wide-angle lens has about twice the shooting area of the standard 35mm lens. The powerful 24x optical zoom can be used both in still and motion picture recording. The Extra Optical Zoom function uses the center part of the CCD to extend this 24x zoom ratio to powerful 50.6x zoom at a resolution of 3-megapixel or less in still picture recording.

The Panasonic Lumix FZ45 improves upon its best-selling predecessor in a number of important areas, most notably the lens range. In the shadow of the PowerShot SX30 IS it's easy to overlook the FZ45's new 24x optical zoom. It may not be as long as the Canon, but it does offer wider and much longer coverage than the earlier FZ38 - and the 600mm maximum will be more than sufficient for most photographers. For videographers, the new 3in screen provides a much better view for HD 16:9 movie shooting. As for image quality, the FZ45 wasn't actually any better in our tests than its predecessor, but it certainly wasn't any worse. So which super-zoom camera should you buy of the major new models? The FZ45 is one of the most affordable, not to mention one of the lightest too. As always it boils down to comparing features and being honest with yourself over which ones really count to you personally.
